Hands on Fire Reviewed by Women In Music Network UK

Greymatter’s debut album ‘Hands on Fire’ is a fine achievement – if not for it’s classy arrangements and tempered production, then by way of it’s fitting tribute to songwriter Georgey’s sheer dedication to music.

Five years in the making, the four-piece, all girl band serves as a perfect gateway for her graceful, evocative songs. There’s no doubt that on first hearing the album, it’s the harmonies that haunt you. Georgey and Emma (Kavanagh)’s voices compliment each other heartbreakingly well – their voices wrapping around each other track after track. I’m reluctant to mention the Indigo Girls (isn’t that a typical response?), but it’s hard not to be reminded. Or perhaps, it’s just that their songs take me back to the joy of hearing such damn good harmonies!

It’s an album full of songs that pull at your emotions – stories and situations we all of us recognise all too well! It’s a pleasure though, to find yourself seduced by such warm melodies and lyrics – stirring up memories of love and tenderness - only to be stung by some cracking lines (“you didn’t mention the best part of you was a lie”). But then, I like a good song about

love and loss me!

Have a listen and break your heart. Go on.

Jac Caught Up with Greymatter and asked a few Questions for all you

Greymatter fans out there

How long have you been together?

We have been together now for just over 2 years now and now we all feel like we've married each other!

Who writes the songs?

Georgey writes the songs for the band at the moment but we are looking to all write some together in 2007.

What's your favourite Greymatter song? Why?

We all have different ones! Georgey's favourite is Ground to elevation.. and also a new one called 06.32 which is also the rest of the bands favourite.. you should see us at practice we jump around to it lots!

Best and worst gigs?

Best Gig by far would Brighton Pride on August 5th 2006 and I don't believe we've had a worst gig yet .. they've all been great but I'm sure we will at some point!

Where do you see yourself heading in the next few years?

We see ourselves having a great time doing what we all love to do and that's music.. and somewhere hopefully along the way someone might decide to give us a little break and if not then we'll still be here with smiles on our faces playing for the crowds and enjoying every moment..
